About WVOE
Written by Ben Paulson

WVOE 97.7 FM is the student radio station of Northwestern College, St. Paul, MN. We broadcast from the first floor of the Mel Johnson Media Center located just south of campus.  In our case, "broadcasting" would be a strong term since our signal barely covers the campus dorms, so that is why we stream our station over the Internet. WVOE is a free-form, alternative Christian music college radio station that breaks free from any one format.  We play local Minneapolis/St. Paul area artists such as Bensonwells, In Harbour, Tyler Burkum, Weaver At The Loom, Caitlyn Smith, Hyland, and others.  We regularly play national artists like Anberlin, MuteMath, Paramore, Mae, Mat Kearney, Switchfoot, Copeland, House of Heroes, The Myriad, Sleeping At Last, Falling Up, Relient K, Jon McGlaughlin, and The Rocket Summer, to name a few.  WVOE:  free-form, alternative Christian music college radio.

Core Values
Written by Ben Paulson

The purpose of WVOE is to learn about radio, learn a little about music, build relationships, and do it while representing our college in a Christ-like manner. We are stewards and missionaries of the airwaves. At WVOE, our work calls us to serve others. Many would like to change culture, but that won’t happen until you start with yourself. We want to lead others to the glory of Christ, but in order to do so, we must first seek him with all our heart, all our mind, and all of our soul. It is our HOPE that you will realize the awesome power of God through what we do on the other side of the airwaves.

History of WVOE
Written by Ben Paulson

WVOE signed on the air on January 26, 1981, but since then the station has changed dramatically. Gone are the peg board walls and musty basement smell of Nazareth Hall, but the spirit of its origins lives on.

While the broadcasting department has been around since the early days of KTIS, the broadcasting department didn’t start providing music until 1979. The station first beamed music into the cafeteria and when the dorms were opened in the 1980, KTIS engineers and Richard Long worked feverishly to place WVOE on “carrier current” AM radio system.. During the fall of 1980 the organization for WVOE was established and after a series of meetings with key members of the college administration, an operations staff was organized. During winter quarter the staff planned a program schedule and got everything ready to go on the air. WVOE’s first broadcast was the evening of January 26, 1981. At that time the AM system was only in the main residence hall. The system was expanded to include Moyer Hall in March of 1981.

WVOE began in 1981 and now 25 years later has moved into the beautiful state-of-the-art Mel Johnson Media Center- a building we share with KTIS radio. We are only limited by the level passion we have for the audio industry. Let us manage God's mercy.
